Understanding Where Your Botanicals Really Come From

Why “Locally Made” Isn’t the Whole Story with Essential Oils

One of the most common questions we’re asked is: “Are your essential oils locally produced?”

It’s a thoughtful question—and it comes from a good place. More and more people want to support local businesses and make conscious, informed choices. We feel the same way.

The truth, however, is that essential oils are part of a truly global ecosystem.

Essential Oils Are Grown Where Nature Intends

Unlike many other products, essential oils can’t simply be made anywhere. Each plant has very specific requirements when it comes to climate, soil, altitude, and sunlight. These factors directly influence not only whether a plant will grow—but also the quality and biochemical composition of the oil it produces.

Lavender thrives in regions like France and Bulgaria. Frankincense comes from parts of the Middle East and Africa. Tea tree is native to Australia. These environments can’t be replicated elsewhere without compromising the integrity of the plant—and ultimately, the oil.

In our industry, Canada is sometimes referred to as “the land of the trees,” because conifer species are among the few aromatic plants that grow abundantly here. While we are incredibly grateful for what our climate offers, it also means that many botanicals must be sourced from other parts of the world.

What “Local” Means to Us

While the plants themselves may come from abroad, the heart of our business is local.

We are a small, independently owned, female-owned, family-run Canadian company. Every decision—from sourcing to formulation to customer care—is made with intention, integrity, and a deep respect for both people and plants.

The Importance of How Oils Are Sourced

Not all essential oils are created equally, and much of that comes down to how they are sourced.

We work directly with small-scale, artisan farmers around the world who cultivate their botanicals specifically for therapeutic use. These growers understand the importance of harvesting at the right time, distilling with care, and preserving the integrity of the plant throughout the process.

This level of attention has a profound impact on the final oil—its aroma, its complexity, and its biochemical profile.

In contrast, much of the global essential oil supply is traded through large-scale commodity systems, where oils are bought and sold in bulk. In these systems, oils are often blended from multiple sources and are no longer traceable back to a specific farm or region. They are typically produced for industrial uses such as fragrance or flavouring, rather than with therapeutic applications in mind.

Why This Matters

The way a plant is grown, harvested, and distilled directly influences the quality of its essential oil. When botanicals are cultivated with therapeutic intent, the resulting oils tend to have greater integrity, depth, and consistency.

For those using essential oils as part of their wellness or skincare rituals, this difference matters.

A Thoughtful, Global Approach

Supporting local doesn’t have to mean limiting ourselves to what grows in our own backyard. It can also mean supporting ethical, sustainable farming practices around the world—while choosing to work with businesses that operate with transparency and care at home.

For us, it’s about honoring both: a global network of dedicated growers, and a local, values-driven company bringing those botanicals to you.
