Catnip (Nepeta cataria) is one of nature’s most fascinating botanicals when it comes to keeping insects at bay. Research has shown that compounds naturally found in catnip can be highly effective at repelling mosquitoes and other biting insects.

You may have noticed that we don’t include catnip essential oil in our Twilight Outdoor Mist—and that’s intentional.

Catnip essential oil is an extremely concentrated extract that contains high levels of naturally occurring compounds such as nepetalactones. While these compounds are responsible for its impressive insect-repelling properties, the essential oil itself is generally not considered appropriate for routine topical use. It has a higher potential to cause skin irritation and sensitization than many other essential oils, and there is limited safety data supporting its use in leave-on products. For that reason, we choose not to formulate with catnip essential oil.

Instead, we’ve house distilled our own Catnip Floral Water.

During steam distillation, the beneficial water-soluble plant compounds and trace aromatic molecules are gently captured in the floral water, while only minute amounts of the volatile essential oil remain. The result is a much gentler botanical ingredient that offers the fresh character of catnip without the highly concentrated levels of essential oil found in the pure extract.

Our Catnip Floral Water can be used on its own or incorporated into your own outdoor body mists, room sprays, or linen sprays for a naturally inspired approach to enjoying time outside.

As always, every batch is distilled in-house in small quantities to preserve the freshness and integrity of the plant.
